What is pre-consumer recycled polyamide?
Pre-consumer recycled polyamide is a type of recycled polyamide made from industrial waste generated during the production of polyamide fibres (also called nylon). Unlike post-consumer recycled polyamide, which is made from end-of-life products, pre-consumer recycled polyamide is produced from waste generated before finished products are made.
Pre-consumer waste can include non-compliant polyamide fibres, production offcuts, surplus raw materials or other waste generated during the production process. This waste is collected, sorted, cleaned and turned into recycled polyamide pellets, which can be used to make new polyamide products.
Is recycled polyamide an eco-friendly alternative?
Pre-consumer recycled polyamide is considered a more sustainable option than virgin polyamide, as it reduces industrial waste and the consumption of raw materials. What's more, producing pre-consumer recycled polyamide often requires less energy and emits fewer greenhouse gases than producing virgin polyamide.
It should be noted, however, that recycling polyamide, whether pre-consumer or post-consumer, doesn't solve all the environmental problems linked to producing synthetic fibres. Producing recycled polyamide can still have environmental impacts, particularly in terms of energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and waste production. That's why it's important to consider every option available to reduce the environmental impact of textile production, including using natural fibres and reducing the overall consumption of textile products.
