What is recycled acrylic?

Recycled acrylic is considered an eco-friendly material, as it avoids the pollution caused by making virgin acrylic, a polluting synthetic material. Wash it in a Guppyfriend 🐠

What is recycled acrylic?

Acrylic is a chemical synthetic fibre derived from petroleum. It's widely used in clothing: wool-look jumpers, faux fur... We tell you all about acrylic here.

While acrylic is a highly polluting material, we can only welcome its recycling.

Recycled acrylic means:

  • Less acrylic dumped in nature or incinerated, so less waste and pollution. Acrylic gives off toxic fumes when incinerated, and releases plastic microparticles into the environment as it breaks down.
  • Less acrylic produced, so less pollution. Producing this material takes 30% more energy than polyester (which is already far from a model...)

That's why recycled acrylic can be considered an eco-friendly, zero-waste material.

Recycled acrylic, but not without a Guppy Friend

Be careful though: even recycled acrylic releases plastic microparticles into the environment. To prevent this, the best solution today is to use a washing bag called Guppy Friend. It traps the vast majority of microparticles and keeps them from polluting marine ecosystems.
