Why use Grapeskin?
Winemaking produces a lot of organic waste, which makes up grape marc. It consists of the skins, the seeds and the stalks (the stems and branches the grapes hang from).
Today, this grape marc is used as a raw material for distillation and for extracting grape seed oil, or it can be used as compost.
Today, thanks to industrial advances, grape marc can also be used as a raw material for plant-based leather alternatives such as Grapeskin.
How is Grapeskin made ?
1/ The grape marc is collected and recovered after the grape harvest.
2/ It is dried and ground into a fine powder, which forms the base of the grape faux leather.
3/ A blend of vegetable oil, recycled polyester and water-based polyurethane is added. This binds all the material together and creates a hard-wearing material. In general, the proportions of the plant waste and recycled polyester blend range from 70 to 90% grape marc powder and 10 to 30% vegetable oil-polyurethane blend.
4/ The material can then be dyed and cut.
5/ The material is ready to be made into bags, shoes, etc.
