What is refibra®?

REFIBRA® fibre is a type of lyocell, an eco-friendly man-made fibre. It combines wood pulp, cotton scraps from the textile industry and a non-toxic solvent, over 99% of which is recovered. REFIBRA® uses 20 times less water than conventional cotton.

What is REFIBRA®?

REFIBRA® is a new eco-friendly material very similar to Tencel®, developed by the Austrian company Lenzing.

REFIBRA® is in fact made using the same process as Tencel®, except that instead of using wood pulp as the only raw material, the engineers chose to add cotton scraps from the textile industry.

The fibre therefore contains 30% reclaimed cotton, mainly from pre-consumer sources (scraps) or post-consumer sources (used clothes and textiles).

The Tencel® process is then applied: dissolving with a non-toxic solvent, over 99% of which is then recovered and fed back into production.

REFIBRA®: an eco-friendly material combining recycling and new technology

Lenzing's ambition for REFIBRA® is to recycle not only cotton scraps but also clothes that have already been worn and thrown away, which in Europe amount to more than 4 million tonnes of textiles every year, according to Ademe.

REFIBRA® lyocell is therefore a fibre of the future, combining recycling, waste reduction, eco-friendly closed-loop production and respect for the planet's natural resources. Making it requires 20 times less water* than conventional cotton fibre.

The resulting fabric is a high-quality lyocell, soft and hard-wearing, with a silky look. We explain everything about Tencel and lyocell here.
